Google Analytics, an indispensable tool for digital analytics, has evolved over the years, with Google Analytics 4 (GA4) being its latest iteration. This blog post delves into the significant updates in GA4 rolled out in 2023, which have further enhanced its value for digital marketing experts.
Google officially shifted from Universal Analytics to GA4 on July 1, 2023. GA4, designed to replace both Universal Analytics and GA360, introduced numerous enhancements and new features, including advanced data collection and processing capabilities, robust data privacy controls, and improved integration with other Google products.
GA4 differs significantly from Universal Analytics in various aspects, including data collection, user-level data, data privacy, event tracking, custom dimensions and metrics, cross-device tracking, and platform support. Here are the key differences:
GA4 offers four key areas to analyze data: Home, Reports, Explore, and Advertising. The Reports section contains predefined reports providing top-level insights, while Explorations offer advanced data analysis techniques for deeper actionable digital analytics insights.
GA4 Reports section includes two primary collections: Life Cycle and User.
GA4 allows you to customize reports to meet your unique needs. You can create new collections, topics, and reports and edit existing ones. This feature, however, is only available to users with Admin access.
Building a custom report in GA4 is similar to building a custom report in Universal Analytics, but even simpler. You can select as many dimensions as you need and up to 12 metrics.
Once you've designed your reports, topics, and collection, you'll need to publish the collection before it appears in your Reports navigation.
The Explore feature in GA4 provides a collection of advanced data analysis techniques that allow you to perform ad-hoc queries, sort and filter data, add segments, and export results to other products.
For more advanced data manipulations, you can export your Explore data tables to a spreadsheet, such as Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets.
Google Looker Studio and BigQuery offer robust solutions for data visualization and reporting, and advanced data analysis, respectively.
GA4 can provide powerful insights to optimize your MarTech strategy, especially with its BigQuery integration that allows you to query data within the last hour or minute for real-time decision making.
With GA4 becoming Google’s sole digital analytics platform, it's crucial for businesses to migrate from Universal Analytics to GA4. A full implementation is required before the Universal Analytics sunset date to ensure year-over-year data availability in GA4.
GA4, the latest version of Google Analytics, offers numerous enhancements and new features, making it a powerful tool for digital analytics. Its transition from Universal Analytics, advanced reporting features, and seamless integration with other Google products make it an essential tool for digital marketers. Utilizing GA4 to its full potential can drive businesses forward with data-driven decisions.
